CMJ Music and Film – October 22-October 25

On Friday, October 21st,  I sat on a panel at The CMJ Music and Film Festival called “ Music Career Mapping 2011 and 2012 “ with Reverend Moose of The Syndicate, Wheeler Newman of Full Sail, Trudy Lartz, of Neilsen Soundscan and __________ of Good Cop PR. We discussed   the ways students, recent grads and career changers, can build and maintain a career into the music industry.  We offered tips on email etiquette, writing cover letters, interviewing, and the various ways you can enter into the industry via unpaid internships, job placement opportunities and or starting your own business.  The panel was very interesting because we (the panelists) all came into the industry in a variety of different ways therefore the listeners got a chance to hear real life stories of behind the scenes current industry professionals.

And finally my only CMJ event as an attendee was on Thursday evening , October 20, 2011 when I attended the screening of  Beats Rhymes and Life The Travels of Tribe Called Quest with an after movie discussion with Michael Rapaport the Director. Being an avid fan of their music it was exciting to see, how the group was formed, their musical influences, their association with Native Tongues, their record label Jive and the CEO at that time Barry Weiss and the myriad of group issues that arise and oftentimes lead to the fall, then rise, then fall of a such a talented group of performers. Upon viewing the film you definitely see how the group synched artistically and creatively. Each one added their own uniqueness to the group. Phife’s flow and high pitched voice, Q-tips musical genius when it came  incorporating music from the different genres especially jazz, _________adding the beats and his skills on the turntables and the fourth member who left early in the group but remained you might say the Spiritual supportive member of the group __________.  But for a number of reasons, the group pretty much disbanded after their 3rd commercial album.  Something that is not exclusive to the Hip-Hop, Rap genre.

New Day, New Beginning

GroupWSBest1Hi Everyone,

Today, I officially begin my vacation. I just finished two of the best weeks of the summer spending time with some incredible young 16-17 year old kids from my What Makes A Star? Program at NYU. The program is for students who have expressed an interest in being in the music business in the future. I can say, without a doubt, the future of the music business is looking real bright.

I decided that I wanted to get back into writing in my blog. Haven’t done so in awhile but its something that I want to do for myself. Its therapeutic and I come upon such interesting things and people. The one person I would share all of these things with was my mom. No matter what she would listen and we would just laugh about things on a daily basis. I miss that more than anything. She really was my best friend and confidante.

Back to more happy things! The last two weeks were so incredibly busy. Went to Apollo Amateur Night, did a backstage tour of the Barclays Center and went to the Harry Fox Agency two times each. Went to dinner with the kids and both groups completed incredible projects for the following artist’s- Kori Kay- http://www.korikayharris.com , Andrew Smith- http://www..Andrew Smithofficial.com and Fancy Reagan, http://www.fancyreagan.com

.

Met and hung out with some incredible people as well including JoJo Brim, Sr. VP of A&R at Epic Records, Joey Fleming, a former student of mine and two students presently in the program who are either mentoring and/or  managing the above name artist’s- Julia Pernicore and Erin Dougherty.  Keep up the good work !!

CeeLo- Bright Lights Bigger City

I love this video by CeeLo.  Perhaps because it captures the essence of the big city and a night out on the the town. The uptempo bright melody, highlighted with the the refreshing sounds of the strings and buried underneath the pounding bass makes you want to head out for a night on the town. Get your party dress on, jump into the limousine with your best buddies or your honey, have appetizers then dinner  at the Red Rooster in Harlem, jump back into the limousine, have more champagne, go to the newest hot club in the Meat Packing District, dance dance dance until the wee hours of the morning,  cruise down Broadway  ending up at a 24 hour diner for breakfast .

As you drop off  each of your BFF’s,  and you and your honey head home to crash you say  “Oh, What a night”.
